Newry Gateway Club received some structural damage at the weekend with the high winds and rain leaving a gaping hole in the roof leaving the much loved charity deluged with water.
Luckily a member of the management committee saw the damage and staff were able to mitigate against an even worse situation and the popular community Bite & Banter event on Christmas will hopefully be able to go ahead as planned.
The roof tiles had come down in the main hall and staff were able to acquire industrial tarpaulin, buckets and storage containers to collect the deluge of water that was coming through the open roof. The PSNI were called and managed the situation to ensure that the roof wouldn’t cause any further damage to Kilmorey Street or to the general public.
Paddy Duffy, Chairman at the charity said "We are totally bereft at the potential impact that this may have on not only our members but also to all the user groups who use the club. We will endeavor to make sure that this devastation will not impact on the Bite & Banter which is a crucial part of our community especially at Christmas Time.
"We hope that the Christmas Community Spirit here in Newry District will help us get back on track so that we can continue to provide our crucial service to our community."
