People affected by sight loss are being invited to an information session at Newry Library on Thursday 13 November from 11am to 1pm.

Louise Kenny from Royal National Institute of Blind People in Northern Ireland will be on hand to give details about a monthly social group in the Newry area and will show off the latest products designed to help people with sight loss, including mobile phones, kitchen gadgets and Braille products. Friends, family members and professionals who work in visual impairment or disability support are all welcome to attend.

The charity also runs a monthly social group in Newry on the second Thursday of every month, with the next meeting taking place on Thursday 11 December.

Pauline Small developed significant sight loss due to diabetic retinopathy and says getting involved with the group has made a real difference to her life. She said: "Being involved with the group has been so good. It's great to get together with people with all different sight issues and support each other and learn about all different things like useful technology, products, services that are out there we can avail of, and just have a chat and some craic. I've made genuine new friends. We did several walks during the summer months there, we grab a coffee, sometimes lunch, and groups like this just help to keep you getting out there, keeping active and help your mental health as well."

Fiona Joyce, Community Social Action Coordinator with RNIB, says the monthly meetings offer more than just conversation and provide a chance to build confidence, share experiences and form lasting friendships. She said: "Living with sight loss can feel isolating, but it doesn't have to be. Our groups provide a safe, welcoming space where people who are blind or partially sighted can connect, learn from one another, and access support."
