Newry medical student qualifies as a doctor in England.

Newry medical student Matthew Severyn from the Armagh Road, has qualified as a doctor in England.

The son of Artur and Tatiana, well-known language translators in the area, Matthew attended St Patrick's Primary School in the Meadow before progressing to St Colman's College, where he achieved 10 A* grades at GCSE and three A* grades at A-level.

Matthew studied medicine at King's College London and also completed an additional year at the University of Cambridge, where he was awarded a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Medical Science (Psychiatry). He graduated in medicine from King's College London in early July with an ‘MBBS with Distinction’.

Throughout his studies, both at home and in England, Matthew became actively involved in a range of medical and community initiatives, including family respite services and events organised by the Confederation of Community Groups in the Newry area.

He also has fond memories of his Family Medicine placement at Dr McVerry's Practice, which he describes as a memorable and valuable learning experience and extends his warmest wishes to Dr McVerry, Dr Farnan, Dr Agail and Clare Keenan.

Matthew is returning to London at the end of July, where he will begin work as a Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctor at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
