Work is continuing on phase one of a shared cycleway/ footway on A28 Carnbane Way, between the Damolly Roundabout at the Mourne Country and up Craigmore Way towards the Camlough Road roundabout, but this coupled with three other ongoing funded projects still puts our Council area far far behind our neighbours in Louth!
The 2km route will make it safer for walkers and cyclists to travel from the east end of Newry including those in Damolly and pupils at the Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School up towards the Camlough Road and Train Station or even to Damolly Retail Park. Phase one is expected to be finished by the end of March.
It marks a very small start locally to the Department for Infrastructure's Active Travel initiatives. Our Council district still remain extremely far behind our counterparts across the border. In 2022 Louth County Council with a population of around 130,000 have been allocated €6,533,361 from central Government in Active Travel Grants.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council with a population of 182,000 have allocated £40,000 in 2022 to carry out their recent Active Travel Masterplan and this coupled with 2 sums of £25,000 from DFI to carry out feasibility studies for a Newry City Greenway and a Newry to Warrenpoint Greenway plus the money it is costing to provide this Damolly route, is the sum total available for 2022 to date, for Newry, Mourne and Down.
