Speaking at the Funeral Mass, Fr Callum Young said “Marty, he indeed fought the good fight, he has finished his final race.We see in his life, his loves and passions that Marty was someone who enjoyed racing, he enjoyed sports and competition. He enjoyed exercise, physical activity. He was a great footballer. Liverpool, Celtic football teams. He was also a player for County Down and he played all his life. He was a great sportsman, not only in gaelic football but a cyclist, runner, triathlon athlete and he also loved to share his passion for sports. I think it’s testament of this to see how many of you have come here today to pay your respects to him, to support his family with your prayers and your presence.

Fr Young continued "He went on also to manage several clubs Newry Celtic club, Shane O’Neill’s twice, Mitchel’s and Bosco clubs. And he shared his passion with young people. But we also know he fought a fight against Motor neurone disease which he was diagnosed with just over a year ago and he continued to have the same zeal and passion for life even in those difficult times.”
A moving tribute by fellow sportsman Tony Bagnal was also read out "Marty was a legend … a true legend, Marty was a warrior, Marty was a battler. His unquenchable thirst to win and his boundless energy were totally inspirational. Not only did his bravery and determination discourage rivals, but his winning personality always gave his team-mates a massive boost." Tony wrote.
Martin is survived by his wife Roseleen, sons Kenneth and Ryan, grandchildren Lorcán, Niall and Ellie and brothers Kevin and Padraig.
Following the funeral Martin was buried in Monkshill Cemetery.
