The Newry Rainbow Community and friends were on song in Grounded last night for their Sing out against homophobia night to mark IDAHO – the International Day Against Homophobia & transphobia.
Singer Songwriter Shane Morgan provided the entertainment.
Speaking at the event NRC Chairman Rory Rafferty reminded people that It was on 17 May 1990 that the World Health Organisation finally removed homosexuality from its "International Classification of Diseases" list.
He added that “all over the world people will make small actions to mark IDAHO - just like ours here in Newry tonight - but these small local actions when taken as a whole, remind us of the victories won and also the amount of work that needs to be done.”
Cllr. Charlie Casey said he was delighted to attend the event in his capacity as Mayor. He congratulated the Newry Rainbow Community for organising the event and added, “Newry & Mourne District Council is committed to equality and the promotion of good relations between all communities, including our lgb&t community, whose confidence and visibility continues to increase as a result of this and other initiates delivered by the Newry Rainbow Community. There is a lot of work still to do and my Council will continue to work in partnership with the NRC to address the needs of lgb&t people across Newry and Mourne”
