A stretch of the Carlingford Lough Greenway from the Albert Basin in Newry to Victoria Lock has reopened following maintenance work carried out on the popular path.
The greenway was closed to cyclists and walkers following Storm Eowyn in January. Repairs have been made to fencing and the path has been restored to its former width with gravel laid over the entire route.
Currently the surface would be difficult for bicycles with narrow tyres and indeed any cyclist will find it tougher to cycle on than a tarred surface but It would be hoped that the gravel will bed down with use.
Works are ongoing between Victoria Lock and the border in the final piece of the route that will see Newry linked to Carlingford giving a safe route for cyclists and walkers. The section will comprise of approximately 1km of elevated boardwalk between the Newry River and the Omeath Road. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have said that this should be open in early summer 2025.
