Write a commentThe Department for Infrastructure is holding two community drop in sessions in Newry following the recent announcement of the Preferred Route for the Newry Southern Relief Road. The project has been mentioned as one of the projects forming part of the Belfast Regional City Deal.
Both sessions take place from 10am to 8pm. The first one is tomorrow, Thursday 15 Nov and next month Thursday 6 December at Newry Conference Centre, The Mall, Newry.
Th proposed Southern Relief Road would link to the south of Newry City, between the A1 Dublin Road dual carriageway and A2 Warrenpoint Road dual carriageway meaning that Warrenpoint Harbour bound traffic would not have to travel through the city centre. Part of the plan would be a bridge across the Clanrye River and Newry Canal.
The Inland Waterways of Ireland Newry and Portadown Branch are campaigning to make sure that the proposed bridge allows ships to access the Albert Basin via Newry Canal as of at present.
A spokesperson commented "It is imperative that this major objective, as outlined by the NMDD Council in 2008, is fulfilled. That is - navigational access for tall ships with a mast height of 35 metres."
