Newry Swimming Pool is closed 'until further notice' due to 'maintenance' issues according to a post added earlier today to a Facebook page that includes the facility.
It has been known for some time that the pool needed to be closed for what appears to be repair work to tiles in the pool but at this stage it's not known if today's announcement relates to this or if the maintenance issues are something unconnected. The announcement doesn't appear on the Council's Facebook page and no press release has been issued.
Originally it had been proposed to close over Christmas 2022 but Councilors managed to postpone potential works at the pool. This decision was made way back in November 2022 when they said "officers will continue to work with the original project team and contractors to determine a programme for closure of the swimming pool, prioritising minimal disruption to service users." Over a year later the and the 'programme' has never been announced.
The announcement on the NMD Be Active page said "Newry Leisure Centre Swimming Pool will be closed until further notice due to maintenance issues. We are currently trying to resolve this as soon as possible.
"Further updates will be posted on our social media channels. Health Suite remains open. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
