A major proposal to transform Newry into a satellite city for Belfast and Dublin commuters, potentially delivering up to 6,000 new homes in the Newry Banbridge corridor, has been welcomed by Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty.
The "Newry Next" document has been advanced by businessman Paschal Taggart and Ger Perdisatt, working alongside McNulty. The proposal presents Newry as a solution to the housing crisis affecting both the North and South, echoing the success of other European satellite cities such as Malmo in Sweden, where thousands of people working in Copenhagen, Denmark reside.
Mr McNulty said “This proposal hands local government and Stormont a plan on a plate. With the resource of the Civil Service, the possibilities and logistics of this plan must be further solidified and scoped out. The proposal has been shared with political leaders North and South who I understand are all broadly supportive in principle, and an endorsement from Martin McAleese gives this vision major credibility. I think this idea is exciting and positively disruptive, and. offers a tangible step towards the ideal of a New Ireland.”
