Work started in April to upgrade traffic lights on one of Newry's busiest routes still remains unfinished almost 4 months later, with pedestrians and cyclists having to dodge traffic every time they want to cross at the toucan crossing close to the entrance of the Carlingford Lough Greenway. In reply to a question from Newry.ie the Department for Infrastructure the government body responsible has not been able to give a date for when the lights will be operational, saying the work "will be completed as soon as resources are available"
In their reply the DfI explained the reason for the delay to date "The Department found damage to an underground duct when trying to connect power to the new Toucan crossings"
Another traffic light site in the city is unfinished even longer, with delays in getting electricity to the site being blamed. The crossing at the turn-off for Derrybeg Lane, on the road from McCanns Corner to the Camlough Road roundabout was supposed to be completed by the end of February 2024 but it also remains unfinished. These lights will make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists travelling up the new active travel path from Mourne Country/ Fiveways to access Newry Railway Station.
Speaking on these lights A DfI spokesperson said "There were delays outside the Department’s control due to the need to install electrical power to the site. Now that this has been installed the final connection will be completed as soon as resources become available."
