The Newry branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s (IPSC) weekly ‘pots and pans’ protest for Gaza have a very special 'guest' arriving next Thursday, 28 August with the arrival of the now famous ‘Grannies for Gaza’ quilt in Newry, as part of its journey around Ireland.
Created by Craftivism for Palestine, the ‘Grannies for Gaza’ quilt was made by a collective of women and allies from 32 counties in Ireland and further afield. Each of the quilt’s 2,300 hand-crocheted squares, stretching more than 40 metres in length, represents ten children murdered by Israel since October 2023.
“That represents 23,000 innocent Palestinian children,” says Niamh Bonner, a founder of Craftism for Palestine. “Sadly, the quilt is still growing as the children are still being murdered. We made the quilt over a period of 8 weeks to rage, resist, remember and reflect on their lives taken too soon in this genocide. We first displayed the blanket outside the Dáil on the 10th of July. We aim to bring it to each of the 32 counties.”
By the time the quilt reaches Newry, it will have visited Dublin (including the Palestinian Embassy) Mayo, Derry, Sligo, Carlow, Westmeath, Kerry, Louth, Galway and Tyrone.
Marc McShane of Newry IPSC said, “Each Thursday evening at 6.30pm the people of Newry stand outside Finegan and Son Café in Kildare St to protest the ongoing genocide in Gaza. For Thursday August 28th we would love Newry people to come out in force to hold the blanket and demonstrate their solidarity with the people of Gaza.”
