Work involving broken boards along on the walkway on Merchants Quay in Newry is expected to be completed today following several weeks of the area being cordoned off from the public. Broken boards at the popular walking spot have been a regular occurence in the last year or so. A Council spokesperson said the work was initially delayed due to the availability of the special composite material the boards are made of.
The spokesperson added “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council can advise that work is expected to be completed today, Monday 24 July, to the broken walkway boards along Merchants Quay."
As part of the £2.5m Newry Linkages Public Realm Scheme the walkway was opened in August 2014. At the time the Deputy Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Councillor Brian Quinn who passed away this year said: “The delivery of this scheme represents a significant investment in Newry’s Waterfront as highlighted within the Newry City Centre Masterplan and has given a further boost to the rejuvenation of Newry’s historic canal. Council in partnership with others will continue to encourage further regeneration investment right across the district in the years ahead."
