Nominations are now open for the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Annual Civic Awards, which recognise people and groups who make a difference in their communities. The campaign was launched by Council Chairperson Councillor Glyn Hanna under the banner #CelebratingWHO.

Nominations close on Sunday 25 October 2026, and the awards ceremony will take place on Friday 13 November 2026 at the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle.

Nominations can be submitted through the online form on the Council website at www.newrymournedown.org from Monday 12 October. Residents, voluntary organisations, community groups and elected representatives are all invited to put forward a name. Successful nominees will be contacted during the week commencing Monday 2 November.

The awards recognise individuals, volunteers, young people, organisations and community champions whose efforts help strengthen communities, improve lives and make the Newry, Mourne and Down district a better place to live, work and visit. This year’s campaign asks a simple question: Who has made a difference to you? The Council says that could be a volunteer giving up their time, a young person leading by example, a group bringing people together or an individual quietly supporting others behind the scenes.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr Hanna said: “Every community has people who make a real difference, often without expecting recognition. They are the people organising activities, supporting neighbours, helping local causes and creating opportunities for others.

The Civic Awards are an opportunity to say thank you and to shine a spotlight on those whose generosity, commitment and community spirit help make Newry, Mourne and Down such a special place. I would encourage everyone to take a few minutes to nominate someone who deserves to be recognised.”

This year’s Civic Awards will also support the Chairperson’s chosen charities, Mourne Stimulus and Heartbeat NI. Mourne Stimulus provides opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to develop skills, confidence and independence, while Heartbeat NI supports children and adults living with congenital heart disease and their families.

Cllr Hanna will host a charity raffle on the evening of the awards, with all proceeds shared between the two organisations. He recently met representatives from both charities to launch this year’s fundraising initiative and encourage support for their work in the community.

Cllr Hanna added: “I am particularly pleased that this year’s awards will also support my chosen charities, Mourne Stimulus and Heartbeat NI. Both organisations make a profound difference to the lives of local people and I look forward to raising funds for these worthy causes on the evening of the awards.”
