The Old Warrenpoint Road is to be resurfaced next month following confirmation from Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins MLA. Newry City Councillor Valerie Harte has welcomed the £685,000 investment, which she said will deliver significant benefits for residents, road users and businesses.
The scheme will see the stretch of road from Chapel Hill to the Greenan Road junction resurfaced, with the strength and surface quality of the road greatly improved. It will also include completion of the much needed footpath linking Cole Court to the roundabout at Greenbank.
Work had originally been due to start in August but will now begin on Monday 7 September, with the scheme expected to take up to five weeks to complete. Some disruption to traffic is expected during this period, though the department has said it will work to minimise this and avoid lane closures at peak times.
Councillor Harte said she had been working with the local community to lobby for the works. "We have been working with the local community to lobby for this much-needed work to be done," Cllr Harte said.
Cllr Harte added that the investment reflected the Minister's commitment to the local road network. "This investment in the Old Warrenpoint Road is most welcome. It's good news for residents in particular and is a reflection of Liz Kimmins' commitment to improving our road network and improving road safety," she concluded.
