Write a commentMost young post primary school pupils (56%) live less than three kilometres from school but yet only 3% of them cycle and 16% walk to the school.
These figures have been published in the Department for Infrastructure's Travelling to and from School - Young Person's Behaviour and Attitudes Survey 2019. The survey involved 3,892 pupils aged between 11 and 16.
50% of young people got to school via bus while 32% travelled to school by car. 73% of those who travel by car travel with siblings and/ or friends.
Living closer to school, better weather, not having things to carry, cycle lane on my route and someone else to walk with were the main factors that encouraged young people to walk or cycle.
Things that young people like about walking and cycling to school included: I can talk with my friends, it makes me feel healthier, it is enjoyable, it is better for the environment and I can travel without an adult.
Compared to the last time the survey took place in 2016 more young people now travel by bus although all other other methods saw a reduction.
20% of pupils said they would like to walk to/ from school while 8% said they would like to cycle.
