Littering continues to be a terrible blight on our district. Photograph: Columba O'Hare/ Newry.ie

There has been only one fine for littering issued throughout the Newry, Mourne and Down District since January 2020 till now. Circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic may have contributed to the low figure. Litter continues to be a blight on the local landscape with rubbish regularly thrown onto pavements, out vehicle windows and at scenic spots district wide.

Details published by the council in answer to a recent Freedom of Information request documented the number of fines handed out for fly tipping, littering and dog fouling.

Our local authority has also handed out six fines for fly tipping since January while there has been only two fines throughout the district for dog fouling in the same period.

In 2018 Newry, Mourne and Down issued 46 littering fines and 10 dog fouling fines.
