Over thirty road schemes have been delayed as a result of a recent legal challenge affecting the award of a resurfacing contract for the Newry Mourne and Down District Council area.

The Department for Infrastructure had intended to progress these schemes during the current financial year but they will now run into 2022. The DFI have said that the traffic light scheme at Sugar Island/ Water Street in Newry isn't affected and it's still expected that this will be complete in February 2022.

A DFI Spokesperson said "The Department is working at pace to develop and implement a new interim strategy for resurfacing term contracts. The first phase of this, which includes new contracts for the Newry, Mourne and Down Council area, will be going out to tender shortly for award early in the new year. All schemes are subject to ongoing review and reprioritisation."

Expressing her concern Newry and Armagh MLA Liz Kimmins said “Our roads are already a disgrace, the last thing they needed was a year without proper resurfacing investment. A £120 million resurfacing budget has now been cut down to 80 million because these council areas cannot go ahead with works."

Kimmins concluded “It's vital that these barriers are addressed and the Department gets badly needed investment where it needs to go ASAP".
