Fancy owning a (very) small piece of Newry History for £50+
Well then you better get yourself on to Ebay where an English seller is selling a Button presumably from a coat of a worker on the Newry and Armagh Railway!
The front of the button has an image of a steam engine with the words Newry and Armagh Railway inscribed around it. On the back of the button the manufacturers name John Woodhouse, Dublin.
Coming from an age where workers quite literally worked the shirts of their backs for very little reward, it's interesting to see a solitary button from the self same clothing attract so much interest and bids (Currently £46)
The Newry and Armagh Railway Company operated from the 1850's firstly between Armagh and Goraghwood and then to the Albert Basin in Newry. The line closed in stages from 1933 when the link from Armagh to Markethill was cut with the final nail in the coffin in 1965 when the section from Goraghwood ceased to operate.
The Line still contains Ireland's longest Railway Tunnel, albeit not operational - Lissummon Tunnel measuring 1608 Metres!
Just imagine how convenient it would be today for people working in Newry or Armagh if the line still existed!
The Auction concludes on Thursday the 26th of January if you want to get your bid in. Click to go to the Button's Ebay Page
