Tomorrow 19 June, councillors from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council plan to vote on the planning application for the £18m Newry Civic Centre and People Before Profit are calling on them them to stop it going ahead.
Speaking on the project PBP Newry & Armagh representative Marc Mac Seáin said “At least £10m of the unnecessary costs for this controversial White Elephant will come from area residents, who’ve already had significant rates increases over the past number of years never-mind the eye watering costs of the confused Mourne Gateway project projected to be as much as £50m.
“These ludicrous spends come at the same time as people still live through a cost of living crisis, as the Stormont social housing builds are due to be eviscerated by more than half for 2025, disability support is cut, whilst GP & hospital services are cut to the brink which is most acutely felt in our under resourced border community. The proposed Newry Health Hub remains completely up in the air.
“We urgently need investments in our communities & services, improvements in people’s material conditions rather than this unnecessary Civic Centre.”
