Planning permission has been granted for 35 Apartments and three retail units at the junction of Merchants Quay and Canal Street.

The site in question is at 6 Merchants Quay surrounding 2 Merchants Quay to the north west and east and west of 2-8 Canal Street Newry. The application was made by Kelly Brothers, Warrenpoint.
The planning Proposal was applied for in July 2020 and involves the demolition of existing buildings, (formerly P&R Motors car showroom) and erection of three ground floor retail units (Use Class A1) and 35 apartments.
There will be associated car and cycle parking, bin store, servicing areas, amenity space & landscaping and access arrangements from Merchants Quay and associated raised kerbing.

The building will be four storeys in height with the height influenced by neighbouring property.
Designed as a single building it will create a strong frontage on to Merchant's Quay, actively turning the corner on to Canal Street.
The three retail units will see Units 1 and 2 having single aspect on to Merchants Quay while Unit 3 will take advantage of the sites corner location and enjoy active frontage on both Merchants Quay and Canal Street.
At present the area is seeing a bit of a resurgence both in renovations and in rebuilds. The roof of the former O'Hare's Bar in Canal Street was stripped a week or so ago and plans are also in place there for housing.
