Planning Permission has been granted for a new Public House in Kildare Street in Newry.
Located on the site of the former Riverside Restaurant, the application in the name of M&M Properties Ltd, Mayobridge will see the restaurant converted to a public house with 2x 2 bedroom apartments above.
It is proposed that the ground floor will be altered and extended to accommodate a bar and lounge to the front of the building and a bar, toilets and a dance area to the rear.
The application site is located within Newry Conservation Area and Area of Archaeological Potential and the frontage of the building will include hardwood double glazed windows and doors to match existing openings. The existing shop frontage will be refurbished and repainted.
Historic Environment Division stated that they welcome the revised proposed materials on the front façade to hardwood timber windows and requested that these new windows are timber sliding sash, to match the existing style and proportions.
Over the years several bars have been located in the area. Norman Brown Snr ran The Star Bar in Kildare Street in the 1970's while way back M McMullan's was in operation in the late 1800's.
