Planning permission has been granted for a mixed use development on the grounds of the Railway Avenue Car Park and old toilet block in Newry.

Development of the site would be welcome as in recent years the site has fallen into decay, at times becoming a dumping ground for rubbish and earlier this month a fire took hold at the disused toilet block.

The application in the name of Cregagh Developments, Belfast includes the provision of 43 apartments as well as retail (Class A1) on the ground floor and provision of 43 parking spaces.

A retail unit will have frontage on Monaghan Street and Railway Avenue; a second retail unit will have frontage on to Railway Avenue whhile a third will face on to Upper Edward Street. The Monaghan Street block will have four storeys of apartments above the retail unit while the other two blocks will have three.

A design document explains "Many of the apartments will also benefit from having a dual aspect with views over the city." Vehicles will enter the site from Upper Edward Street and exit via Railway Avenue. The apartment will range in size from 61 to 78m2.
