Write a commentPlanning permission is being sought to place a full scale replica of the Bessbrook Tram in the centre of the Camlough Road Roundabout as a public art installation. The tram will include seated and standing figures depecting passengers and the driver of the tram.
Remnants of the tram were found in a field beside Camlough Lake and Southern Regional College students restored it to it's former glory last summer.
Presently the tram sits in storage on the Albert Basin ready for it's hopefull relocation to the roundabout at the Egyptian Arch with the potential to recall the heyday of the Bessbrook and Newry Tramway, a project years ahead of it's time when it opened in 1885 to carry workers from the Great Northern Railway Station at Edward Street in Newry to Bessbrook Mill.
