An application has been submitted for planning permission to carry out extensive repair work at St Catherine's Dominican Church.
On 17 October the landmark Newry church celebrated its 150th anniversary. The Dominican community in the city is currently fundraising for the project for the listed building and it is expected that £1.9m will be needed. Three phases of works are being proposed over a three year period.
A Design and Access statement from P O'Hagan and Associates explains the church in more detail "St. Catherine’s Church is a French Gothic revival style church constructed in Newry granite with sandstone dressings. More commonly referred to as the Dominican Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Catherine of Sienna the building is located on Dominic Street Newry and is attached to the Dominican Priory. Main elements of the church comprise the double height nave, semicircular apse, two lower side aisles and a square tower and spire. The church is finished externally in rock-faced Newry Granite with sandstone dressings and bandings to window and door openings. The roof of the nave is pitched, with granite verges, finished in Welsh slate and rounded at the apse. Rainwater goods are cast iron. Side aisles roof are lean-to finished in Welsh slate. Windows generally are a mix of single and double arch lancet with tracery heads with leaded glass. Windows to the link block are a mix of timber sliding sash and casement."
The planning application describes repairs and remedial works necessary. They are planned to include the following: Removal and replacement of defective roof coverings and leadwork to main roof, roof timber treatment for wet/dry rot, repairs & repointing of external stonework, repairs to defective sandstone surrounds, cast iron rainwater goods repairs, glass windows and storm glazing repairs, provision of new ramp access, replacement of defective internal plaster, replacement of all defective building services, repairs to defective wall and floor coverings and repairs to internal and external doors.
