An application for planning permission has been submitted to display a restored tram from the Besbrook and Newry Tram Company at a location in Bessbrook. Bessbrook and Newry Tram Company tram ran from Bessbrook to Newry and opened in 1885 and closed in 1948. It's main trade was to take workers to and from Bessbrook Mill.
The application in the name of Bessbrook Development Co Ltd seeks to locate the tram in the area known as the 'Tirzah' in Bessbrook village.
The application states it's for the "Remodelling of existing open space within the Conservation Area to incorporate the external display of an original restored tram from the Bessbrook and Newry Tram Co. complete with "platform", associated access steps/ramps and roof canopy over."
It further adds that "Construction of the "platform" will require the demolition of the existing covered shelter and a portion of the north wall of the 'Tirzah'. It is also proposed to demolish the existing east and west shelters."
Another tram was rebuilt in 2015 by Southern Regional College Students modelled on tram parts found in a field near Camlough and plans were made to site it at the roundabout beside the Egyptian Arch in 2018 and then after that fell through at Newry Railway Station in 2019 but neither progressed and the tram was put into storage at the Albert Basin.
