Plans to extend Monks Hill Cemetery in Newry have been put out for Tender by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Works which are part of a phase two extension will include additional plots with provision of extra paths lighting and drainage at the council run facility.

Tender documents explain "Phase 1 of the cemetery is currently at full capacity and it is therefore a priority to proceed with the development of the remainder of the overall site.

"The proposed works will include the extension of the existing cemetery undeveloped part of the site with the construction pathways, lighting and landscaping to provide access to the designated burial areas.  In addition, the project will include the provision of drainage pipelines."

Budget for the works has been suggested at £50K and it is hoped that work could begin on site in July and finish by the end of September.
