Police are asking that motorists do not park on the footpath in the vicinity of Carlinn’s Cove, Rostrevor,. It follows engagement with local residents and elected representatives.
Sergeant Conor Valentine of the South Down Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The community have highlighted concerns that large vehicles are parking on the footpath in order to use a nearby filling station, causing issues for residents exiting their homes and obstructing the view of pedestrians crossing the road. We were also made aware of ongoing issues with speeding vehicles in the area.
“We would urge motorists to be considerate when parking to ensure pedestrians using the footpath and crossing the road are not hindered, and that the sight line of motorists is not obscured. Any vehicles found to be illegally parked or causing an obstruction to local residents, emergency vehicles or traffic may be removed at considerable expense to the owner, a fixed penalty notice and/or penalty points may be given to the driver of the vehicle or the owner of the vehicle could be taken to court.
“Excess speed has been identified as an issue along this stretch of road between Warrenpoint and Rostrevor, which has seen an increased volume of pedestrian activity in recent years. Motorists are reminded that speeding is one of the most common causes of collisions in which people are killed or seriously injured on our roads. You should always travel within the speed limit, and at a speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
“In addition to working in partnership with relevant partner agencies and stakeholders in order to find a longer term solution, police will continue to monitor the situation and will take enforcement action where offences are identified.”
Sergeant Valentine concluded: “We all share the responsibility to prevent death and serious injury on our roads. We urge road users to think about the safety of everyone using this busy stretch of road.”
