Police Investigate Series of Shop Thefts Across District

Police are investigating a series of thefts from shops across the district, with officers believing many of the incidents share similar methods used by the suspects who are targeting high-value items from smaller community stores.

Inspector Taylor explained that the suspects typically operate in groups of four to six individuals and appear to focus on health and beauty products along with premium alcohol brands like brandy or champagne. The thefts are mainly taking place in smaller community shops rather than large supermarket chains.

According to Inspector Taylor, some of the suspects have been observed dressing in long flowing clothes including maxi-skirts and long dresses, often layered with other long cardigans and coats that allow them to conceal stolen items on their person. The suspects have also been known to carry rucksacks and large bags.

Inspector Taylor said: "In investigating the recent reported thefts we have determined that many of the incidents are very similar in the 'modus operandi' used by the suspects. We believe that by raising awareness of this apparent 'modus operandi' we can help business owners be alert to risk."

He added: "We're urging all business owners, employees and members of the public, to report any concerns to police as soon as possible and we will use all of the tools at our disposal to identify and arrest offenders in this series of thefts."

Police are encouraging business owners to install CCTV if not already in place, with footage from previous thefts proving invaluable in helping build a profile of the offenders. Officers are also advising retailers to consider adding anti-theft devices to higher value items, including premium alcohol brands.

Inspector Taylor stressed that information provided by businesses and the community is vital in helping police form a picture of what is happening for retailers and develop a response to tackle the issue.
