Police are urging drivers to reduce their speed ahead of the Easter holidays as part of 'Operation Lifesaver', the PSNI''s new approach to tackling speeding.
At a press conference in Belfast yesterday 16 April, Chief Superintendent Sam Donaldson from the PSNI's Operational Support Department explained that officers will be conducting road safety operations across all districts during the Easter break, including deployment of road safety camera vans.
"Speeding is one of the Fatal Five main contributory reasons why people are dying on our roads," said Chief Superintendent Donaldson. "In the past year, speeding was the main causation factor in nearly 10 per cent of fatal and serious collisions, and a contributory factor in many others."
With increased traffic expected over Easter, police are emphasising that all drivers have a responsibility to keep everyone safe on the roads.
"If you speed, you could end up being involved in a collision, an injury collision or even a fatal collision," warned Donaldson. Consequences of speeding can include fines, penalty points, court appearances, loss of licence, cancelled insurance, job loss, and imprisonment.
Chief Superintendent Donaldson concluded: "You have the power to keep yourself and everyone else on the road safe. Play your part, slow down and help save lives.”
