Businesses in Monaghan Street, Newry were unable to access their premises for around 12 hours yesterday, 20 June, due to a security alert on the street. Police sealed off the entire length of Monaghan Street from around 9.30am. The alert ended just after 9 last night with police declaring the suspected pipe bomb a "crude yet viable device"
Officers attended the scene following a report received at around 8.20am yesterday and Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) attended around 10.30 and proceeded to carry out a controlled explosion on the device. The object was been removed and has been taken away for further forensic examination.
Inspector Gibson said: “This security alert on one of Newry’s busiest streets has caused major disruption to local businesses and resulted in some people being evacuated from their homes today as we conducted this public safety operation.
“We would like to thank them for their understanding and patience as we conducted our investigations."
