Bernadette (Bernie) Canavan, Poyntzpass.

Well known Publican Bernadette Canavan (Bernie) has died at her home in Poyntzpass after a period of poor health.

Bernie ran the Railway Bar in Railway Street in the village for many years along with her late husband Desmond and continued to hold court behind the bar after his death with a chat and a smile for everyone. Their son Brian continues the tradition.

O'Hanlon's GAC, Poyntzpass paid tribute to her on their Facebook page saying "Mrs Canavan was one of the villages most respected elders, and always had great time for those who visited the pub for a beer and a chat. She could be heard giving a beautiful rendition of her favourite song, Danny Boy, with great gusto. She was a very kind hearted ladywho always had a card for the locals children on their birthdays or First Communion. "

Mrs Canavan is survived by sons Brian, Desmond and Damien, daughter Fiona and brother Charles and wider family circle.

The popular local will be buried in Poyntzpass tomorrow at 2pm. Due to COVID-19 the house and funeral are strictly private.

O'Hanlon's GAC have suggested that people could stand along the route to the Chapel if they wish as long as social distancing guidelines are adhered to.

Passing on her condolences Poyntzpass native Councillor Oonagh Magennis explained that Mrs Canavan will be sadly missed."Mrs Canavan affectionately known as Bernie, was a highly respected woman. Her passing has deeply saddened all here in the village. She will be sadly missed. Sincerest sympathies to all the family"

MLA Justin McNulty also paid tribute adding "Bernie was a great hostess. She had a great interest in people. Bernie was widely admired & widely respected. She stood up in very difficult times for her values which were always life enhancing. "

We at Newry.ie also pass on our sincere sympathy to her family and many friends.
