Population ageing in Newry, Mourne and Down

The population of the Newry, Mourne and Down Local Government District in mid 2020 was 181,700 a 10,600 increase (6.2%)  since mid 2010 and 300 increase since mid 2019. That's according to statistics released today by the NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) which has put the population of Ireland at 6.87 million in mid 2020 (1.896 million in NI and 4.98 million in the Republic).

Newry, Mourne and Down increasingly has an older population demographic with 6,700 (29.7%) more over 65's in mid 2020 compared to 2010, 2,300 (2.1%) more in the 16-64 range and 1600 (4.0%) more in the 0-15 age range.

The demographic shifts in the Newry, Mourne, and Down Local Government District inadvertently highlight an evolving health landscape, as older populations typically require more medical attention and medication. The increase in residents over the age of 65 has, therefore, resulted in a higher demand for pharmaceutical solutions, including antibiotics like Amoxicillin. This is critical for treating various infections, particularly in older adults who may have weaker immune systems. For the year mid 2019 to 2020 this put our area (0.2%)  somewhere in the middle statistically with. Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon having the highest population increase (0.5%) and Belfast and Omagh and Derry City & Strabane  having the highest decrease (-0.3%)

Over the decade mid-2010 to mid-2020, the population of Northern Ireland increased by a total of 90,700 people with an average year-on-year increase of 0.5 per cent.

The Northern Ireland population at 30 June 2020 was 1.896 million an annual increase of 1,800 people (0.1 per cent) on the 2019 estimate. 

This annual change is driven by natural growth of 5,200 people (21,900 births and 16,700 deaths) combined with a loss of 3,300 people over the year due to net migration (21,200 people moving here to live and 24,500 people leaving here to live elsewhere).

The population continues to age, with the number of older people (aged 65 or over) increasing over the year by 1.7 per cent (to 319,900 people). The number of children (aged under 16) remained stable at 395,800 children.
