South Down MP Chris Hazzard and local Mourne Councillor Michael Rice have this week commenced a community consultation in the Scrogg Road area of Kilkeel describing the transformation of the existing public amenities as a “priority" for Sinn Fein. They believe families and local residents in the area deserve modern play facilities and accessible, fit for purpose recreation space.
Mr Hazzard said "In recent weeks myself and Cllr Michael Rice have been responding to a number of complaints regarding anti-social behaviour in the vicinity of the Scrogg Road playing field in Kilkeel.
"In dealing with these issues it has become clear that the existing playing field and adjacent play park are no longer fit for purpose; indeed their derelict and unkempt condition would seem to encourage much of this unwanted anti-social behaviour.
"Open space and outdoor recreation are important components of life. They provide many cultural, social, economic and environmental benefits and contribute positively to a community’s physical and mental health, and a better quality of life.
"Modern, fit for purpose public amenities also enhance the character of residential areas and help contribute positively towards urban regeneration.
"With this in mind we believe that the Scrogg Road playing field and play park should be transformed - it is a large community open space with great potential to offer modern, accessible opportunities for outdoor recreation and also act as a much improved visual amenity in the Scrogg area of Kilkeel.
Cllr Michael Rice added “We believe positive action like this in partnership with the local community can help eradicate anti-social issues that have plagued many residents in the Scrogg and nearby Grange Meadows, whilst simultaneously providing first class recreation opportunities.
“If anybody in the local area has any ideas, or wants to actively participate in this process please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
