A reader has expressed their frustration at the way they believe Newry has been neglected in recent years and have highlighted issues they have seen around the city.
The reader (name supplied) said: "It is so frustrating watching the city going further into the gutter. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council show no pride in our city."
They explain that Merchants Quay from The Quays down to WIN Business Park has a beautiful railing the whole way along the canal, work done by Larsen from Belfast 10 years ago, but they claim "In all that time it has not been cleaned once by NMDDC. Green algae covers the whole thing."
Other things that have caught their attention include old bridge signs that they claim have been neglected for years, railings near Sugar Island have not been painted in years. "What other city or town in Ireland or Europe would neglect both a river flowing through it and a canal as badly as we do. Building a new park is obviously a must in Newry but unfortunately the basic housekeeping is sadly lacking of what we already need to maintain." they explain.
Recent grass cutting by the Mourne Country Hotel while welcomed by our reader, the fact that litter wasn't picked first meant "in the process they turned what was probably hundreds of pieces of rubbish into thousands if not tens of thousands of pieces of litter."
They have also questioned the quality of the workmanship of the streets in the city that have been resurfaced in recent months. Mentioning Edward St they claim there are already holes in the middle of the road.
We have asked council for comment. See Council replies to city in the gutter allegation
