Rubbish being dumped at a site that contains several clothing banks on the side of Chapel Road in Newry is causing much annoyance to residents with items dumped in recent days including electrical items, car tyres, clothing, suitcases, carpet and furniture.
All these were burnt on Wednesday in an incident that caused smoke damage at the site, which is located beside St Mary's High School and literally around the corner from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council's Household Recycling Centre!
A resident of the area contacted Newry.ie this week pointing out that the illegal dumping has been going on for over a year. They had contacted councillors to try to get something done about it but they say the issue still remains.
People have been dumping material day and night despite it being so close to the recycling centre. "Every day when we go up there would be another bunch of rubbish dumped." the resident explained.
Two of the charity bins are marked as raising funds for Orphan Aid Association and Cuan Mhuire. The Cuan Mhuire bin was removed yesterday,
Residents want all the charity bins removed and believe this would solve the issue. "We need the charity bins away because as long as they are there people are going to dump stuff." the resident said.
