The Newry Southern Relief Road Consultation closes tomorrow, Tuesday 4 March at 5pm so you only have a short time left to let the Department for Infrastructure know your thoughts on their proposals for the road, or on their plans to block Newry Ship Canal to access by tall ships and high masted yachts with a 12m high fixed bridge.
Their proposal would bring to an end almost 300 years of access by these boats to the Albert Basin in the very heart of Newry and many residents of the Fathom area fear the consequences of the road to what is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The Southern Relief Road plans to link the Warrenpoint Dual Carriageway at Greenbank to the A1 Belfast Dublin Road via a road through Fathom and across the Flagstaff Road.
In their own literature the Department for Infrastructure explains: "the purpose of the Newry Southern Relief Road is to improve access to the regional gateway of the Port of Warrenpoint from the A1/N1 Belfast to Dublin corridor. It does this through the construction of a new link road suitable for significant volumes of Heavy Goods Vehicles traffic between the A1 and A2 dual carriageways. As a result it will improve traffic and environmental conditions in Newry City."
