One of our city’s most loved lady's has passed away aged 101. Bridget (Bridie) Wilson who lived at Doran’s Hill, died 9 April, just four days short of her 102nd birthday and was the areas oldest resident.
Bridie was born in Upper Ballinderry, Lisburn and lived in London before finally settling in Newry. She was a mother to 12 children, grandmother to 39 grandchildren and great grandmother to 17 great-grandchildren.
A much respected lady who gave so much back to her community, Bridie volunteered in the Cancer Research shop and in the Southern Area Hospice shop, well into her 90's.
Tributes have been paid to the inspirational lady on social media. One former neighbour recalled how "Bridie in the 1940’s cycled from a cottage near Ballinderry to dam head train all throughout the war years, 6 days a week. An accomplished office secretary for management in Lilliput Laundry, Dunmurry."
Another explained "Mrs Wilson was an absolute lady whose beauty, manner and attitude was a perfect example that age is just a number" and another added "What a beautiful wee lady inside and out. Always smiling may she rest in peace."
Bridie's remains will repose at Paul McEvoy's Funeral Home, 80 Canal Street, Newry, today Saturday 12 April from 12 noon until removal at 4.30pm for 5pm evening prayers in the Church of the Assumption, Drumalane. Requiem Mass for Bridie will take place at 2pm on Sunday 13 April with burial afterwards in Cloughogue cemetery.
