Road safety measures put in place outside St Joseph's Convent Primary School in Newry have been welcomed by local political representatives. A traffic island is being completed this week which should slow traffic and make it easier to cross the road.
MLA Justin McNulty has welcomed the delivery of the road safety improvements carried out by the Department for Infrastructure.

Mr McNulty commented “Before Christmas, I raised the dangerous nature of the junction of Catherine Street & Edward Street with Minister Mallon so I’m delighted to see that this has been actioned. This is a very busy junction, with a high volume of traffic, as well as schoolchildren from both St. Joseph’s Primary and Our Lady’s crossing the road multiple times a day.
“We know that there have been a number of collisions at the junction, so these improvements will serve to increase the safety of pedestrians and put the minds of parents at ease. Nichola Mallon has shown herself once again to be a Minister who listens to the concerns of local communities and responds with action.”

MLA, Liz Kimmins has also welcomed the new measures. Ms Kimmins said "In November last year I, along with my Sinn Féin colleagues met with local residents, the principal of St. Joseph's and DFI officials regarding serious road safety issues on Catherine Street, just outside the school.
"DFI agreed to upgrade the road markings and build a pedestrian Island to make crossing the road safer for pupils and their families.
"This location has been an accident blackspot for many years, and the safety of children going to and from school has been a particular concern for the local community. I am confident these new measures will improve road safety for all going forward."
