‘Road to the Rising’ Centenary Cycle

A Centenary Cycle from Newry to Dublin remembering Newry man Patrick's Rankin's part in the Easter Rising is taking place on Sunday 17th April 2016

Born in 1889 in St Mary’s Street, Newry Patrick cycled from Newry to Dublin to take part in the Rebellion, the only person from Newry to take part in the rising.

This event, part of the South Armagh 1916 Centenary Commemorations programme is run in association with Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916 Cumann Chimhneacháin Iúr Cinn Trá and the Patrick Rankin Cycling Club Newry. 

Thomas Marron, Chair of the South Armagh Centenary Committee, is inviting people to join in this commemorative event. 

“The aim of the ‘Road to the Rising’ Centenary Cycle is to commemorate and highlight the role of Patrick Rankin in the momentous events of 1916.  It is also a time to commemorate all those who worked, fought and died for Irish Freedom and to celebrate the spirit of freedom and progressive vision which motivated them."

The event is a 100k leisure cycle from Newry to Dublin and participants must have previously taken part in a 100k cycle event or similar distance charity event and be prepared to put in some pre-event training.  Participants will have the re-assurance of riding with experienced cyclists and a full medical and mechanical backup team.

All participants will receive a Special Edition 1916 Centenary Cycle Jersey and Medal along with a copy of the 1916 Proclamation.  Refreshments will be available throughout the cycle along with shower and changing facilities and a hot meal at the end.
