Write a commentThis year, Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor will host the third ‘Darkness into Light’ charity 5km walk on Saturday 11th May, kicking off before sunrise, at 4.15am.
This special annual walk provides the opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been bereaved by suicide. Our team of volunteers in Rostrevor, have returned year on year to help make the experience a rewarding one and to help us all continue to raise awareness in the global fight against suicide and self-harm.

Darkness into Light is not a typical walk/run charity event. Having expanded beyond the island of Ireland to 200 venues around the world, Darkness into Light has grown in momentum, size and sentiment to become more of a movement than an event. Darkness into Light has a set of core values centring on the reduction of suicide and the support of those affect by suicide and or suicide ideation that binds every event and make it feel special and identifiably DIL where ever you are.
Whether the event is happening in Rostrevor in Northern Ireland or Ras Al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates we aim to ensure that the same feeling is created as we walk from Darkness into Light.
In 2009, in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, 400 people set off on the inaugural Darkness into Light 5km walk to raise funds for Pieta House. From small beginnings, the movement has grown year on year and in 2019 we anticipate that almost 250,000 people will take part in over 200 locations, in 19 countries across five continents.
We are delighted to again have Samaritans of Newry & Dundalk as our Darkness into Light charity partner. Samaritans provide emotional support by phone, email or face-to-face for anyone in distress or struggling to cope. You can contact them on 116 123 or jo@samaritans.org.
