Rostrevor Men's Shed Visited by UK Shed Leaders

Rostrevor Men's Shed has had cause to celebrate after a visit from the top brass of the UK Men's Shed Association, following the group's nomination for Shed of the Year 2025.

Caroline Ellis, Chief Executive Officer of the UK Men's Shed Association (UKMSA), and Rachel Meadows, UKMSA Head of Development, made the trip to the village to see for themselves what has earned the Rostrevor group national recognition. It was, by all accounts, a day the members won't forget in a hurry.

The pair were welcomed in the way Rostrevor Men's Shed does best, with a warm greeting and a well-earned cup of tea. Lunch followed at the Old School House, giving the visitors a taste of the hospitality the village is well known for.

The afternoon took in a visit to Kilbroney Church of Ireland, where members were able to show off a number of projects completed by the Shed, giving a clear picture of the practical and creative contribution the group makes to the local community. From there, it was back to Shed headquarters at 16 The Square for a full tour of the facilities, taking in the workshops, polytunnel and gardens.

Caroline and Rachel were full of praise for what they found, with the welcoming atmosphere, the craftsmanship on display and the variety of groups and classes making use of the space all drawing particular admiration. The UKMSA representatives were also keen to note the significance of seeing a Shed from the north of Ireland recognised at national level, reflecting the positive impact Men's Sheds have right across all regions.

To mark the occasion, members presented their guests with CNC-crafted wooden maps of Ireland, made by Shed members themselves, a fitting reminder of both the skill on show and the group's appreciation for the association's support.

Caroline and Rachel left with a standing invitation to come back any time, with members making clear that "the kettle will always be on."

Rostrevor Men's Shed continues to go from strength to strength as a hub for friendship, skills and community connection, offering a welcoming space for men of all backgrounds. A Shed of the Year nomination and a visit from national leadership suggests that those in the UK are well and truly taking notice.
