PIPS Newry and Mourne (Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide and Self-harm) would like to take this opportunity to thank Sainsbury’s for choosing our charity as their chosen Charity for 2009
Sponsored by Sainsbury’s our first bag pack fundraiser which took place on the 15th December raised £1485.66, Funds raised will be used to support PIPS Newry and Mourne educational and public awareness activities and support families and friends for prevention, intervention and postvention purposes
I know that the ‘Sainsbury’s’ team has already raised money for other local charities and I would like to commend them on their outstanding efforts and imaginative fundraising initiatives. I would also like to thank everyone involved who nominated PIPS Newry and Mourne for the Sainsbury’s 2009 charity of the Year and also to thank everyone who took part in the 1st bag-pack fundraiser and all the very generous Sainsburys shoppers who kindly donated.
PIPS Newry and Mourne have recently held their 4th Annual Christmas Service of Remembrance, Hope & Healing on the 14th Dec for families and friends bereaved through suicide and this was also very kindly supported again by Sainsbury’s who supplied the flowers for the service and some of the light refreshments served afterwards.
Suicide is a major public health issue, It is a devastating event, an individual tragedy and a loss for society. Its emotional and practical consequences are felt by family, carers and friends and often the wider community. For every suicide death there are scores of family and friends whose lives are devastated emotionally, socially and economically,
“But it’s important to realise that suicide is preventable,"
The mission of PIPS Newry and Mourne is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education, reduce stigma, and serve as a resource to those touched by suicide. PIPS Newry and Mourne was one of the first organisations dedicated to the prevention of suicide formed in 2003 and was a co-founding member of the Northern Ireland SSIB, Suicide Strategy Implementation Body. Our history and growth from an all-volunteer, small grassroots group of passionate survivors led us to what is one of today's successful not-for-profit organisations with staff dedicated to prevent suicide. , our work, is based on the foundation and belief that suicide should no longer be considered a hidden or taboo topic, and that through raising awareness and educating the public, we can SAVE lives.
So I would ask everyone who can, to support PIPS Newry and Mourne at these fundraising events , or whatever way possible so that we can continue to help save the lives of our loved ones
