Every 6 seconds someone expressing suicidal feelings contacts a branch of Samaritans. Each branch has to cover the expense of running their own Centre and so each branch relies heavily on donations from the public and on their own fund-raising events. One such event was held recently, by the local branch of Samaritans, in the Quays Shopping Centre, Newry - live music was provided by local band “Hot Ashes” and members of the public were very generous in their contributions. This event also provided an opportunity for Samaritans Outreach Volunteers to make the public aware of the work being done in the area.
Your local Samaritans are located at 19 St Coleman's Park, Newry, and offer emotional support 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. They are available to receive your calls, at 028 (048) 302 66366 if you need to talk, or you can email them at jo@samaritans.org.
