Write a commentMembers of the Newry, Mourne & Down Youth Service Local Advisory Group have held a stakeholder engagement event in Newry Youth Resource Centre. The event was organised to give young people the chance to hear the facts around screen time and raise burning issues around the impact screen time has on our children and young people.
The event was organised and led by the Local Advisory Group for Newry, Mourne and Down, which is made up of a range of representatives from the statutory, community and voluntary sector including young people from Newry & Mourne Youth Council who took a lead role in the planning and running of the event.
The event was attended by young people from across the area who got to hear the scientific facts around the effects screen time is having on the adolescent brain from the key note speaker Orla Murtagh. They also got to engage in a discussion through a walking debate and round table discussions looking at questions such as, should it be managed and by whom? Has it been positive or negative in the development of children and young people? Should phones be allowed in schools?
The event has allowed young people to voice their opinions around this ever growing issue which will feed into the Education Authority Youth Service action plan for the area of Newry, Mourne & Down to provide more support for young people and help meet their needs.
