As if todays historic happenings at Stormont weren't enough drama, the additional news that Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has been suspended from his party following the first sitting of the Assembly has come as a shock. Stormont had been suspended for nearly two years and today Michelle O'Neill was elected as the first republican First Minister.
Mr McNulty an SDLP MLA had been at Stormont for proceedings today before he left to head to Wexford in his capacity as manager of Laois.
Mr McNulty won an All Ireland Medal with Armagh in 2002 and was appointed as Manager of Laois in October 2023.
The BBC has reported that the SDLP has suspended the whip from the MLA citing that he had left the sitting of the assembly "without permission"
