As part of the Shared Areas health and wellbeing community project based at St Joseph’s Boys High School, funding has been provided to create a specialist swimming programme for young people with autism. The project involves proving children and young adults with sensory suitable swimming sessions under the supervision of specialist staff in a nurturing and rewarding environment.

On behalf of the families involved, Mr Brendan Curran (Swimming teacher) expressed great gratitude for the implementation of the project adding, ‘these sessions not only enhance the health and fitness levels of the kids involved, but provide unique opportunities for self-expression, relationship development and communicative enhancements for the youngsters and their families alike.’ Mr Brendan Fearon of the Shared Areas project thanked the swimming coaches for their commitment to such a beneficial project and commented that ‘it’s a great privilege to be involved in the autistic swimming sessions and feedback from parents and staff has been extremely humbling and a pleasure to hear.’
