Fifty years of service to any organisation is certainly a major cause for celebration, but when that organisation is involved in caring for people during serious illness and offering a listening ear when needed, it is all the more special. And so it was that work colleagues of Sheila McGivern organised a surprise party to celebrate her passion for and dedication to the Southern Area Hospice at the Canal Court Hotel at the weekend.
As a schoolgirl Sheila started off in the then St John of Gods Private Hospital washing dishes. After leaving school she came to work in the Private Hospital where she could be changing nappies one minute and feeding babies the next. Sheila soon joined the reception team and then moved into admin where she was Private Secretary to CEO Ann Cooney and Consultant Dr Osmond Morris for many years.
Currently Sheila works in the Hospice reception. As well as being a very dedicated member of staff who is passionate about the work of the Hospice, she is also very involved in annual events: doing readings at the Light up a Life ceremony each December or helping out on the Towpath Walk and the Midnight Walk.
Sheila is held in very high regard by all her work colleagues and this was very evident by the amount of staff that showed up for her surprise 50 years’ service celebration, presenting flowers and gifts and a special booklet to commemorate the landmark achievement.
Needless to say Shelia was back in the Hospice reception the very next morning, meeting and greeting visitors in her own unique and unmatched way.
