With Christmas fast approaching and thoughts of doing that all important shopping here are a few Alternative Routes to get to Newry from Dublin direction and to save a wait of at least an hour coming up the M1/N1/A1
1: Via Meigh
On the M1/N1 take the Exit Signposted Jonesborough as you approach the border. Go up to junction and take Right followed by IMMEDIATE Left. Follow this road (Be warned it is a narrow road!) to the end - a crossroads in the Middle of Meigh and take Right. Follow this road to the end and you will end up at Cloghogue Roundabout where you might still be left in traffic on the Second Exit down the hill into Newry but you will have saved about an hour! Alternatively at Cloughogue Roundabout take the First Exit for Belfast and enter Newry from either of the next two roundabouts, It's the wrong end of town for Sainsburys and The Buttercrane and The Quays Shopping Centres but normally less traffic getting there and you can see the original Newry Shopping areas of Hill Street and Monaghan Street.
2: Via Carlingford and Omeath
This option will take you right past The Quays Shopping Centre and Sainsburys and while longer should still save you at least an hour and is the least likely to have major traffic!
Coming up the M1 take the third turn off for Dundalk signposted Carlingford/ Dundalk. At the Roundabout take the Fourth Exit Signposted Dundalk and at the next Roundabout (Right Beside the First one) take the Second Exit Signposted Carlingford/ R173. Follow this Road for a few miles till you reach a sign to the Left for Carlingford. Take Left and stay on this road till you pass Clady Quarries on the Left as you approach Newry and take next Right which will take you right past The Quays Shopping Centre and should be quiet.
Happy Shopping!
