In partnership with Newry Mourne and Down District Council, the Ring of Gullion Partnership, Tourism NI, and Northern Ireland Environment Agency; Sport NI are holding a two day conference in the Ring of Gullion on 22-23rd June on the Development and Management of Recreation in Protected Landscapes.

The conference will be held at the Tí Chulainn Cultural Activity Centre, located in the heart of the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To book a place on this exciting conference, visit www.ringofgullion.org/events

Site visits have been organised to interesting projects in beautiful landscapes in the area including a visit to Newry Canal.

There is an amazing line up of speakers which include Keynote speaker Terry Robinson who is the chair of the UK and Ireland Outdoor Recreation Network which brings together all of the key government and many non-government organisations both in the UK and the Republic of Ireland to work collaboratively on key topics. Terry will be sharing his experience of working across the UK and his passion for engaging people for place.

Dr Eduard Ingles Yuba, a lecturer at the National Institute for Physical Education in Catalonia and is responsible for the outdoor education programme there will also be speaking. Eduard will share his experience in the Pyrenees and the framework that he has developed for sustainable management.

The conference will also focus on what is going in regards to outdoor recreation in the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with talks from Darren Rice on the exciting European project Ascent which is focusing on European Upland projects which Slieve Gullion mountain is included. There will also be a talk on the development of Derrymore Estate and Camlough Lake.

There will be a conference dinner to enable attendees to network with colleagues and enjoy a south Armagh welcome with music from the Ring of Gullion Traditional Arts Partnership and a lively session with members of the local band Bóthan

Councillor Roisin Mulgrew, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council explains, “This conference will appeal to a range of groups and individuals including policy makers from national and local government for both sport and activity tourism, elected members from within local, regional and national government, activity tourism providers and community based community associations.”

She added “ the conference offers great value for money with the cost of the 2 days coming to £25 covering the cost of the site visits, lunch and dinner. The Council is excited to be sponsoring this conference with our partners Tourism NI, Environment Agency and Sport NI. The Ring of Gullion and this conference offers visitors a chance to explore an exceptional countryside rich in geology, archaeology, wildlife and folklore.”

Costs

£25 for the 2 days (includes, tea/coffee and lunch on both days, transport from venue to field sites and conference dinner at the end of day one).

£15 per day for day delegate rate.
